Why do I need to be concerned about my sin?

All of us have sinned – sin separates us from God, removing the possiblity of going to heaven.  “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”  Romans 3:23  “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one.” Romans 3:10  The penalty for committing sin is death, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:23  The good news is that the penalty for sin has been paid by Jesus Christ himself, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”  Romans 5:8  We must accept His payment on our behalf to be pardoned of sin and gain access to God.  “For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”  Romans 10:13  “ …if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.  For with the heart one believes unto righteousness , and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Romans 10:9-10

Who is Jesus and what does His life, death and resurrection mean for me?

The Bible says that Jesus is fully God and fully man (Colossians 2:9). He came to earth and lived a sinless life so that He is able to relate and sympathize with us. Hebrews 4:15b states that He “was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.” His death on a cross took the punishment for our sins; but God raised Him from the dead on the third day! 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 “Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and…was buried, and…rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.” His resurrection overcame the power of sin. Because of this, He is able to say “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6) Jesus is alive and the only way to get to heaven and God.

How would I ask Jesus to forgive my sin and restore my relationship with God?

A sample prayer might look and sound something like this:Dear Jesus,I can’t make it through life on my own.  I’m not perfect.  I have sinned.  I have come to realize that there’s nothing in the world I can do to make myself acceptable to You.  But I know that You have loved me so much that You were willing to submit to the cross and die on my behalf.  That’s a grace so amazing I cannot understand it; I can only accept it.  And I do; I accept You as my Savior.  I trust in You alone, that from this moment on, I am saved by Your grace.  I am now a child of God.  And I give the rest of my life to serving You and trusting in the joy that only You can offer.  Fill me now, dear Lord, and raise me to walk in the newness of life.  I thank You and praise You!In Christ’s name I pray, Amen.

What should I do next if I prayed to Jesus to have Him forgive and help me?

Jesus promised that He would be with us and help us in this new relationship, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”  Hebrews 13:5  It is important to connect with other believers to be encouraged and strengthened in this new life.  “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Hebrews 10:25 (NIV)  Regularly attending a church that believes and teaches from the Scripture will help you understand God’s desires and His purposes for you.  “’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” Jeremiah 29:11  Get to know God better now so you can enjoy heaven with Him for eternity!
